How Chiropractic Changed My Life

As a child and adolescent, I suffered from benign hand tremors. There was no rhyme or reason behind this, but it was a debilitating and embarrassing condition to deal with. Other kids would notice my hands shaking at church, in the lunch line, in chemistry class, wherever, and of course, I found myself on the wrong end of a lot of jokes and ridicule. I was told it was just a “phase” I was going through, and maybe I would grow out of it.

It was hard for me to understand why I had this problem and no one else my age did. I didn’t find my answer until I started seeing a chiropractor.

I initially started chiropractic treatments for a hip injury I suffered playing football. The trainer had told me I was going to miss a month of playing time and would most likely finish the year playing through pain, so I called my local chiropractor to get another opinion. Needless to say, I never even missed a practice!

Then Came the True Miracle

My chiropractor was able to get rid of my awful hip pain and kept me on the field playing, but that is not the true miracle behind this story.

After about a month of care, I began noticing my hand tremors were not as frequent or severe. At first I did not think much of it, but my “shakes” continued to improve.

Initially, I never mentioned this condition to my chiropractor because I did not think anyone could help, but when I mentioned my remarkable improvements, he was not surprised. He showed me my X-rays again and explained that my atlas (the top bone of the spine) had been out of position putting massive stress on my nervous system, the result was my hand tremors. My life has never been the same since.

Chiropractic Has Chosen Me

That summer, I talked to my doctor about the possibility of myself becoming a chiropractor someday. I had experienced my own small “miracle” and had a strong feeling that chiropractic had chosen me.

So my chiropractor offered me a job to get a stronger grasp on the philosophy and the lifestyle of being a chiropractor. He wanted to make sure that chiropractic was truly meant for me.

Since then, I have never turned back. I have worked with chiropractors ever since that day, through the rest of high school, undergraduate college, and all the way through chiropractic school at Life University! Chiropractic had changed my life, and I have devoted my life to make sure I can help my community in the same way.  Now, I am privileged to work with my wife, Dr. Beth, who is also a chiropractor every day. We have a true family practice!

Dr. Beth Smolick-Reese

Chiropractor

Since being a chiropractor and educating my family about its importance, my mom always says “I wish I had known then what I know now.” As an infant and child, I had seizures, colic and ear infections persistently. Additionally, I had aspirated fluid during the birthing process and my parents nearly lost me. But that life force inside of me prevailed!

Unfortunately, it was not until I was 15 years old that I saw a chiropractor. I had an injury during cheerleading that my mom finally took me. First, we had tried the osteopathic pediatrician, who mobilized my spine, but the pain was still there.

Someone had then suggested that I to go to a chiropractor. We went, it helped me tremendously and I decided that is what I want to do the rest of my life!

A Chiropractic Education with a Focus on Nutrition

I knew I had always wanted to help people, grew up in a household that did everything naturally and also wanted to work with children. Not only did I have an interest in chiropractic, but also nutrition. I went on to Pennsylvania State University to earn my Bachelors degree in Nutritional Sciences. A week after graduating from Penn State, I made the journey to Life University College of Chiropractic in Marietta, Georgia. My life has not been the same since. I learned about how the power that made the body heals the body, that the body heals from the inside-out, not the outside-in, and how even infants can receive chiropractic care!
